What Happens to a Person Immediately After They Have Been Raptured? The Fifteen Events of Eternity – Part Four – The Great White Thorne Judgment – New Heaven and Earth

One of the very most important things that a person can do on this earth life right now is to accept the atonement of Jesus Christ, and experience the new birth of being Born Again.

All of us are sinners, and there is only one way for us to make it into “Heaven,” and that is for us to use our free agency in choosing to accept the gift of the atonement that Jesus is offering all mankind. If we accept this gift, and repent of our sins, we are washed clean through the blood of Jesus Christ.

For those who use their free agency in rejecting or not accepting the gift of the atonement, they will be responsible for all of the sins that they have committed. Because of their sins, they will be judged differently.

At the first of this series, we talked about the “Judgment Seat of Christ,” which was for all of those who have been “Born Again,’ and have no sins because of the atonement of Jesus Christ. Today, we are going to discuss those who have rejected Jesus, and what happens to them at an event described in the Bible as the “Great White Thorne Judgment.”

The Great White Throne Judgment (KJV)

God’s Final Judgment of the Unsaved.

The Great White Throne Judgment is one of the final events described in the Bible. It takes place after the 1,000-year Millennium, when Jesus Christ has finished His thousand-year reign upon the earth and Satan has been defeated for the last time.

This judgment is described in Revelation 20:11–15 (KJV).

1. Jesus Christ Sits Upon the Great White Throne

Revelation 20:11 (KJV)

“And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.”

The Great White Throne represents God’s perfect holiness, righteousness, and justice. Jesus Christ has been given authority to judge mankind (John 5:22).

There will be no escaping this judgment.

2. The Dead Will Stand Before God

Revelation 20:12 (KJV)

“And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.”

All the unsaved dead, both great and small, will be resurrected to stand before God. Again, this comes at the very end of the 1,000-year millennium.

The rich and poor, kings and servants, famous and unknown will all stand equally before Him.

The books will be opened, revealing the works of their lives. Nothing will be hidden from God.

So, what is the Book of Life exactly?

The Book of Life is God’s heavenly record containing the names of those who belong to Him and have received eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ. The Bible also calls it the Lamb’s Book of Life because salvation comes through Jesus, the Lamb of God who died for our sins.

At the Great White Throne Judgment, after the 1,000-year Millennium, the books will be opened, including the Book of Life. Those whose names are not found written in the Book of Life will be cast into the Lake of Fire, experiencing eternal separation from God.

3. The Book of Life Will Be Opened

God will also open the Book of Life.

Revelation 20:15 (KJV)

“And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.”

This is the most serious part of the judgment. Those whose names are not written in the Book of Life will face eternal punishment.

4. Death and Hell Will Be Cast Into the Lake of Fire

Revelation 20:14 (KJV)

“And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.”

The Lake of Fire is the final place of punishment.

The second death is not simply dying physically again. It is the final judgment of those who are separated from God.

Satan will already have been cast into the Lake of Fire following his final rebellion at the end of the Millennium (Revelation 20:10).

5. Will Those Who Were Raptured Be Judged Here?

No, according to the common premillennial understanding of these passages.

Those who were saved and raptured have already received glorified bodies and will have appeared before the Judgment Seat of Christ, where their works are evaluated for rewards (2 Corinthians 5:10; 1 Corinthians 3:13–15). Again, these people have no sin to be judged for because of the atonement of Jesus Christ.

Revelation 20:6 (KJV)

“Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power…”

Those who belong to Christ do not face the second death.

The Great White Throne Judgment is therefore generally understood in this interpretation as the final judgment of the unsaved.

What Happens After the Great White Throne Judgment?

After this judgment, God brings forth a New Heaven and a New Earth.

The New Heaven and the New Earth (KJV)

God’s Eternal Home for His Children

The New Heaven and the New Earth are what God will create after the 1,000-year Millennium and the Great White Throne Judgment. This will be the beginning of eternity, when God’s children will live with Him forever in a perfect world without sin, suffering, sickness, or death.

1. God Will Create a New Heaven and a New Earth

Revelation 21:1 (KJV)

“And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.”

After the final judgment, the present heaven and earth will pass away. God will establish a new creation, free from the curse of sin. Everything will be made new.

2. The New Jerusalem Will Come Down From Heaven

Revelation 21:2 (KJV)

“And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.”

God will bring the beautiful New Jerusalem down from Heaven. This holy city will be the dwelling place of God and His redeemed people.

What does the Bible teach us about this New City brought down to the New Earth?

The Bible describes this magnificent city with:

  • Streets of pure gold, like transparent glass.
  • Walls made of jasper.
  • Twelve gates, each made from a single pearl.
  • Foundations decorated with precious stones.
  • The glory of God illuminating the city.

These descriptions are found in Revelation 21:11–21.

There Will Be a Beautiful River and the Tree of Life

Revelation 22:1–2 (KJV) describes a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and the Lamb.

The Tree of Life will also be there, bearing twelve kinds of fruit.

These are the details shared with us, however, there is something exciting in knowing that we will have an opportunity to continually explore the new earth that God has created for us. Just like us on this earth, I have spent countless days seeing the creations of God that He has placed here on our present earth. I can only imagine that it will also be an incredible experience to explore and discover this new earth.

3. God Will Live With His Children Forever

Revelation 21:3 (KJV)

“Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.”

Imagine living forever in the presence of God! We will no longer be separated from Him by sin. We will belong to Him and enjoy His presence for all eternity.

4. There Will Be No More Death, Pain, or Sorrow

Revelation 21:4 (KJV)

“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”

This is one of the most beautiful promises in the Bible. There will be no more funerals, hospitals, disease, suffering, or heartbreak. All the pain experienced during our earthly lives will be gone forever.

5. There Will Be No More Sin or Evil

Revelation 21:27 (KJV)

“And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.”

Only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life will enter. Satan will already have been cast into the Lake of Fire (Revelation 20:10). Sin and evil will never again corrupt God’s eternal kingdom.

6. We Will Serve God and Reign Forever

Revelation 22:3–5 (KJV)

“And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:

And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.

And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.”

Our eternal lives will have purpose. We will worship God, serve Him, see His face, and reign with Him forever.

Did you catch this teaching?

  The Millennium: We reign with Jesus Christ for 1,000 years.

  After the Millennium: God creates the New Heaven and New Earth.

  For eternity: God and the Lamb dwell with us, and we will see His face.

This is intriguing to me! No one has seen the face of God, with the exception of Jacobs claim.

According to the King James Version (KJV), no man has seen God the Father’s face in His full glory and lived. However, the Bible tells us that certain people have seen manifestations of God, and one day, believers will see His face.

Moses wanted to see God’s face

Exodus 33:20 (KJV)

“And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.”

God allowed Moses to see His back, but not His face (Exodus 33:22–23).

Jacob said he saw God face to face

Genesis 32:30 (KJV)

“And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.”

Jacob encountered God in a remarkable way, but this does not necessarily mean he saw the Father’s unveiled glory.

Jesus said no man has seen the Father

John 6:46 (KJV)

“Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.”

Jesus was speaking of Himself as the One who had seen the Father.

And, now we have learned that one day, we will see God’s face!

I’d like for you to contemplate this teaching. Why do you think that God is waiting for after the 1,000-year millennium to allow “His Children” to see His face? Does this timing have meaning to you?

There is something that you can learn as you prayerfully study this teaching, and I’m going to let the Holy Ghost be the one that teaches you this.
