When Satan watched Jesus Christ willingly go to the cross, he knew he had lost the greatest battle in history. The spotless Lamb of God had become the perfect sacrifice for the sins of the world. Through His death, burial, and resurrection, Jesus Christ accomplished what no man could ever accomplish for himself. The debt of sin was paid in full. Salvation was now available as a free gift to all who would believe. Satan could not stop the atonement—but he could attempt to hide its power.

What if Satan’s greatest deception was not convincing people that Jesus didn’t die for their sins? What if his greatest success has been convincing millions that Christ’s sacrifice was not enough by itself?

The Bible teaches that salvation is completely the work of God. It is not a partnership where Jesus does most of the work and we finish what He started. Yet throughout history, countless religious systems have gradually added requirements that Jesus Himself never taught as conditions for receiving eternal life. Good works, religious ceremonies, sacred rituals, church membership, priesthood authority, temple ordinances, baptism as a saving act, tithing, traditions, or personal righteousness have all been presented by various groups as necessary steps to obtain heaven. While many of these things may have value in the Christian life, the Scriptures never present them as sharing in the saving power of Christ’s atonement.

The Apostle Paul warned that this very deception would come. He wrote:

“I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:
Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.
But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.”
(Galatians 1:6–8, KJV)

Notice that Paul did not say people would completely reject Jesus Christ. Instead, they would pervert the gospel. Satan often accomplishes far more through addition than through outright denial. If he cannot convince someone to reject Christ entirely, he will gladly encourage them to believe in Christ plus something else.

Yet Jesus declared the completeness of His work from the cross with one triumphant statement:

“It is finished.”
(John 19:30, KJV)

Those three words declare that the payment for sin was complete. Nothing remained to be added. Nothing could improve upon the perfect sacrifice of the Son of God.

Paul reinforced this truth when he wrote:

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
(Ephesians 2:8–9, KJV)

Salvation is a gift. A gift cannot be earned. The moment someone contributes his own works toward earning it, it is no longer received as a gift. That is exactly why Satan loves religious systems that shift even a small portion of the glory away from Jesus Christ and onto human effort. If people believe that their own obedience, ceremonies, or righteousness helped secure their salvation, then Christ no longer receives all the glory He deserves.

Paul also wrote:

“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us…”
(Titus 3:5, KJV)

Notice the certainty. He saved us—not because of our works, but because of His mercy.

This does not mean that good works are unimportant. Quite the opposite. Once a person has truly been born again through faith in Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit begins changing that person’s life from within. Good works become the evidence of genuine faith—not the cause of salvation. A healthy tree bears fruit because it is already alive; it does not become alive by producing fruit.

Jesus Himself made salvation wonderfully simple. When Nicodemus asked about entering the kingdom of God, Jesus did not point him toward ceremonies or religious achievements. Instead, He said:

“Ye must be born again.”
(John 3:7, KJV)

The new birth is a spiritual work of God, received by faith in Jesus Christ. It is not earned through religious performance.

Likewise, when the Philippian jailer desperately asked,

“Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”

the answer was immediate and unmistakable:

“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.”
(Acts 16:30–31, KJV)

Perhaps the greatest illustration is found on Calvary itself. The thief hanging beside Jesus had no opportunity for baptism, church attendance, temple worship, religious ordinances, or years of faithful service. He simply placed his faith in the dying Savior.

Jesus answered him:

“Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.“
(Luke 23:43, KJV)

If anything beyond faith in Christ’s finished work had been required for salvation, the thief could never have entered paradise that very day.

The tragedy is that millions of sincere people continue trusting partly in Christ and partly in themselves, or their religion. Many believe they must remain worthy enough, perform enough, or participate in enough religious ordinances to finally qualify for eternal life. Yet Scripture continually points us away from ourselves and back to Christ alone.

Satan’s greatest lie is not that Jesus cannot save. It is convincing people that Jesus’ atoning sacrifice didn’t completely save, and that they must somehow finish what He already declared finished.

The true gospel gives all glory to Jesus Christ. He alone lived the sinless life. He alone bore the sins of the world. He alone shed His blood for our redemption. He alone conquered death. He alone offers eternal life as a free gift to those who believe.

When we stand before God one day, the question will not be, “How many religious ceremonies did you perform?” or “How many good works did you accumulate?” The question will be what you did with His Son.

Have you trusted completely in Jesus Christ and His finished atonement?

Or has Satan quietly persuaded you to place part of your confidence in something you can do?

The answer to that question determines where all the glory belongs.

One of the most difficult things for me was to actually think that MY RELIGION could possibly deceive me. I trusted these leaders with such confidence. Yet as I set out with a desire to learn the TRUE gospel of Jesus Christ, that He and His apostles taught when they were on the earth, I learned quite quickly that satan had infiltrated my own religion, just as scripture indicated that was possible.

“For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.”

When I found the true teachings that are recorded in the New Testament, and compared them with my church’s doctrine, it was OBVIOUS to me. The light of truth far overshadows the darkness of false teachings. Satan had deceived my church leaders from the churches beginning, to add requirements to the atonement of Jesus Christ.

So, what do YOU believe? Do you believe that the atonement of Jesus Christ is a gift of grace, received by you having faith as being complete, and all that is necessary for your salvation? Or do you believe that salvation requires your good works, religious ceremonies and rituals, in order for salvation to be complete?

So why is this important? Do you know that your answer to this question might determine if you go to heaven or not? Let’s let the scriptures answer that question.

“Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

Matthew 7:21–23 (KJV)

21 “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”

In ALL of the teachings of my High Deman religion that I was a part of, they taught So Many Rules in order to make it to heaven, yet in all of this, they did not teach the only requirement that is needed. That teaching is “How a person can become Born Again.” Everything was simply a distraction for what Christ actually taught…

“Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

Jesus taught that entering the kingdom of God requires being born again, a spiritual birth—not a physical birth or a religious ceremony. This new birth comes when a person repents and places his complete faith in Jesus Christ and His finished atonement, trusting Him alone for salvation. Baptism is an important act of obedience after a person has been born again, but it is never presented in Scripture as the means by which a person receives the new birth.

“If baptism is presented primarily as the way to join a particular church, then the focus has shifted from identifying with Jesus Christ to identifying with an organization. In the New Testament, people were baptized because they had already believed the gospel and received Christ—not because they were joining a denomination.” Baptism is the joyful public declaration that a person has been born again through faith in Jesus Christ. It is not intended to be a “step” to join a religious organization. It is my belief that God is very displeased when a religion uses such a sacred ordinance to promote their own organization rather than its true intention.

When you were baptized, were you publicly displaying the very fact that you had been born again, or were you simply taking the step to join a church? There is a profound difference between the two. If your baptism was primarily about joining a church, perhaps it is worth asking yourself another question: Was your faith placed completely in Jesus Christ and His finished atonement, or was part of your confidence placed in becoming a member of an earthly institution? The gospel always points us to Christ—not to a church—as the source of our salvation.

A person’s religion can lead them in the wrong direction when it gradually shifts their trust from Jesus Christ alone to Jesus plus something else. Jesus warned that false prophets would come in “sheep’s clothing” (Matthew 7:15, KJV), and Paul warned against “another gospel” (Galatians 1:6–9, KJV). Any church that teaches salvation depends not only on Christ’s finished atonement but also on religious ceremonies, church membership, priesthood authority, or personal works is directing people to place confidence in something other than Christ alone. Jesus declared, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6, KJV), and Peter proclaimed, “Neither is there salvation in any other” (Acts 4:12, KJV). Every church and every teaching should therefore be measured against the Scriptures (Acts 17:11, KJV), because the true gospel gives all the glory for salvation to Jesus Christ alone.

I hope that you can see just how the adversary can use religion, perhaps even your own religion, into deceiving us, and leading us away from the true teachings of Jesus Christ. As you can see from this writing. The SUBTLE difference could keep a person out of heaven, and isn’t that his goal, to keep you out of heaven?  Is his plan working on you? If you think that it’s your church that will save you, satan’s plan is indeed working to keep you from the salvation that Christ offers.

The plan forward is simple… Become Born Again as taught in the New Testament. When you do as Christ has instructed, the process happens IMMEDIATELY. After which, you can know for certainty that you will be going to heaven, as well as be included int God’s rescue plan of the rapture which will soon take place.

To me, the people who are in the greatest spiritual danger are the ones that think that they have it all figured out, and are following the gospel of their church, rather than the gospel of Jesus Christ as taught in the New Testament. If this describes you, perhaps take a moment to carefully ponder this thought. When you stand before God, your religion will not stand beside you—only your relationship with Jesus Christ and whether you trusted completely in His finished atonement.
