For generations, mankind has searched for the true religion of Jesus Christ, believing that somewhere among the many churches and denominations there must be one perfect institution that holds the complete truth.
Yet when we turn to the New Testament, we find that Jesus Christ did not come to earth to establish a religious empire built upon earthly authority, ritual, or institutional loyalty.
He came to reveal the Father, to preach repentance, to offer Himself as the spotless Lamb of God for the sins of the world, and to invite all people into a personal relationship with Him through faith.
Jesus plainly declared, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6 KJV). He did not point men to religion as the way, nor to church membership, ordinances, or ceremonies as the door to eternal life—He pointed men to Himself.
This truth becomes unmistakably clear in the powerful account of the thief on the cross. Hanging beside Jesus was a man with no opportunity for baptism, no ability to join a church, no time left for religious service, and no good works he could offer before God. Yet in simple faith he turned to Christ and said, “Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom” (Luke 23:42 KJV).
Jesus answered him with one of the greatest promises ever spoken: “Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43 KJV).
In that moment, God showed all generations that salvation is not earned through religious systems, but is freely given by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
After Christ’s resurrection and ascension, the apostles continued this same message. They did not go forth building a man-centered religious system focused on wealth, hierarchy, buildings, or institutional control.
Their single mission was to preach Jesus Christ crucified, risen again, and able to save all who believe. Jesus commanded them, “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15 KJV), and that is exactly what they did.
Peter preached Christ at Pentecost, Philip preached Christ in Samaria, and Paul boldly declared, “For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord” (2 Corinthians 4:5 KJV).
They taught repentance toward God, faith in Jesus Christ, and life through the Holy Ghost. Believers were gathered together not as a worldly institution, but as a spiritual body, for Scripture says, “Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular” (1 Corinthians 12:27 KJV).
Christ Himself is the Head of that body, and all who truly belong to Him—regardless of earthly denomination—are His Church. This means the true Church is not a building, nor a religious brand, nor an organization claiming exclusive authority; it is the living spiritual body of all who have been redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ and born again by His Spirit.
So then, what is the purpose of a Christian religion?
Its purpose is not to replace Jesus Christ, stand between man and God, or convince people that salvation rests in loyalty to an institution.
Rather, its purpose is to support the Gospel, teach the Scriptures faithfully, strengthen believers, gather followers of Christ together in love and fellowship, teach children about the Savior, and shine as a lamp that points souls directly to Jesus Christ.
A healthy church should never glorify itself—it should glorify Him. It should echo the words of John the Baptist: “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30 KJV).
A perfect Christian religion would therefore be beautifully simple: it would preach Christ, exalt His finished work on Calvary, teach salvation by grace through faith, encourage holiness through the power of the Holy Ghost, and foster love among believers, all while refusing to place itself between the soul and the Savior.
In the end, the greatest question will not be what denomination a person belonged to, how faithful they were to religious traditions, or what institution they defended. The greatest question will simply be this:
Did you truly know Jesus Christ?
For eternal life has never been about belonging to the right religious system—it has always been about belonging to Him.
Having looked beyond the traditions and teachings that have found their way into many Christian churches, it becomes clear how subtle deception can be—especially when it shifts attention away from Jesus Christ and places it upon religious systems, institutions, or men.
The adversary’s purpose has always been to diminish the glory that belongs solely to the Son of God and divide that glory among churches, organizations, prophets, leaders, rituals, and man-made authority.
Yet scripture teaches that Jesus Christ alone is the Head of His church, the Author of salvation, and the only Mediator between God and man.
No religion has the right to place itself where only Christ belongs. No church authority has power to stand between a soul and the Savior. No prophet, pastor, priest, or organization can claim a share in the glory that belongs entirely to Jesus Christ.
This deception appears in many forms. Some teach that truth can only be known through a particular church authority, when Jesus declared,
“I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6 KJV).
Others place saving power in temple ordinances, sacred ceremonies, or outward rituals, when salvation was fully purchased by Christ alone on Calvary when He cried,
“It is finished” (John 19:30 KJV).
Some teach that repentance must be administered, approved, or mediated through church leaders, when the Bible teaches that repentance is a direct turning of the heart to God through Jesus Christ, for
“there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5 KJV).
Others burden souls with the teaching that a person must first prove themselves worthy through works, obedience, or religious performance before Christ’s atonement can fully save them—yet scripture plainly declares,
“For by grace are ye saved through faith…not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8–9 KJV).
Good works are the fruit of salvation, not the purchase price of it.
Still others rob Christ of His glory by teaching that membership in a certain church is essential for eternal life, when the New Testament teaches that eternal life is found in a Person—not an institution:
“He that hath the Son hath life” (1 John 5:12 KJV).
Some exalt religious founders, church history, sacred buildings, or denominational identity, drawing hearts to loyalty toward a system rather than devotion to the Savior Himself. Can’t you see this clearly!!!
But Jesus never called men to follow a religious corporation—He called them to follow Him. He never taught dependence on earthly institutions for redemption—He offered Himself as the complete and perfect sacrifice for sin.
Christ’s blood does not share its saving power with church ordinances, human authority, or religious achievement. The glory of redemption belongs wholly, completely, and forever to Jesus Christ alone.
“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12 KJV).
I invite all of you to look at your relationship with Jesus Christ. Is it solely with HIM, or do you have a relationship with a church or religion?
Don’t get me wrong, a church can be a tremendous tool in ASSISTING in our learning of Christ, and in the fellowship that it gives for like minded people. However, it is only a tool, and does not replace Jesus Christ in ANY form.
I still cringe when I hear people express the history of their church as the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Church history has NOTHING to do with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
In most cases, church history serves as the identifier of how the deception of the true Gospel began. It defines how the adversary cleverly established a FALSE gospel, and made you think that it was necessary in order to get to heaven. Sadly, many people, including myself, have been deceived through the cleverness of the adversary.
Since many of us will be meeting Jesus Christ in the next few weeks or months, do you truly know what to expect? Can I be so bold as to tell you that your CHURCH will be NOWHERE to be found?
For churches are not a part of heaven. Our relationship will directly with Jesus Christ Himself. There will be No Other Organization there…No Temples, No General Authorities, No other Leaders… Just us and Jesus Christ.
Just because a person believes something strongly does not make it the truth. The Truth lies only in the teachings of Jesus Christ and His apostles as recorded in the Bible. I encourage you to get busy and study what those truths are if you haven’t already. Stop defending something that is not true, and start learning the Gospel tht Jesus Christ taught. It is empowering, for you do NOT need a church, you only need Jesus Christ.
