I grew up being taught that God has a body of flesh and bones, just like Jesus Christ. When I began unraveling the untruths that were taught by the church that I belonged to, I started questioning EVERYTHING that I had been taught about God. I wanted to find out truth for MYSELF, and not through a religion, especially one that I felt had betrayed me, by teaching so many false doctrines.
So, what do the scriptures say about the nature of God? I’ve learned where to look to find truth, through this scripture:
“But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.”
— Galatians 1:8–9 (KJV)
Paul repeats the warning twice for emphasis:
- Not us (even apostles cannot change it)
- Not an angel from heaven
- Not any man
- No “new gospel”
- No additions or alterations
I will look and research the Gospel of Jesus Christ, found in the Bible… ONLY! There I will learn the true nature of God. So, with that directive, here’s what I found:
The King James Version teaches very clearly that God, in His eternal nature, is Spirit—invisible, unlimited by flesh, and dwelling in glory beyond human comprehension. Yet throughout Scripture, that same God manifests Himself in different ways so mankind can know Him, hear Him, and be redeemed by Him. Here is the biblical evidence:
1) God Is Spirit (His Eternal Nature)
The clearest statement comes directly from Jesus Christ:
John 4:24 (KJV)
“God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”
This is foundational. Jesus did not say God has a spirit—He said God is a Spirit.
Other supporting scriptures:
2 Corinthians 3:17 (KJV)
“Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”
Hold on… Is this scripture talking about God, or Jesus Christ? Who is Lord in this scripture?
This can definitely be confusing at first, because the word “Lord” is sometimes used for God the Father and sometimes for Jesus Christ.
In this passage, Paul is mainly talking about Jesus Christ, but he is explaining that God is spiritual in nature — not flesh-and-blood limited. He is not saying Jesus and the Father are the exact same person. He is explaining their unity and divine nature.
1 Timothy 1:17 (KJV)
“Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.”
God is described as:
- Spirit
- Invisible
- Eternal
- Immortal
- Not confined by physical limitations
2) God Manifested Himself as a Voice
Often God revealed Himself audibly without showing visible form.
At Mount Sinai:
Deuteronomy 4:12 (KJV)
“And the LORD spake unto you out of the midst of the fire: ye heard the voice of the words, but saw no similitude; only ye heard a voice.”
Israel heard God—but saw no bodily form.
At Jesus’ baptism:
Matthew 3:16–17 (KJV)
“…lo, a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
God manifested His presence through a heavenly voice.
3) God Manifested Himself in Fire / Glory / Cloud
God often revealed His presence visibly through glory, fire, and cloud.
The Burning bush. Remember this story?
Exodus 3:2 (KJV)
“And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush…”
Yet in the same chapter, it is God speaking.
Pillar in wilderness:
Exodus 13:21 (KJV)
“And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, and by night in a pillar of fire…”
Mount Sinai, again:
Exodus 24:17 (KJV)
“And the sight of the glory of the LORD was like devouring fire…”
God manifested His glory in visible form.
4) God Manifests Himself Through the Holy Ghost
After Christ’s ascension, God indwells believers by His Spirit.
1 Corinthians 3:16 (KJV)
“…the Spirit of God dwelleth in you”
Romans 8:9 (KJV)
“…if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.”
Galatians 4:6 (KJV)
“God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts…”
God manifests His life within believers through the Holy Ghost.
I’d like to point out something obvious, yet many of us don’t fully appreciate this reality. We are promised that the moment we are “Born Again,” we receive God’s Spirit within ourselves. HE…RESIDES IN US! Stop for a moment and realize the significance of that. WE, are His temple which He resides in.
This concept became quite clear to me as I was studying that the “antichrist” can not be introduced on to the world stage until the “Restrainer” was removed. The restrainer is God’s spirit in His believers… US!!!
God is “removing Himself” in us, by rapturing us away from this earth. Can you see just how special this is? Let’s continue…
5) God Manifests Himself in Heaven as Light and Glory
1 John 1:5 (KJV)
“God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.”
1 Timothy 6:16 (KJV)
“Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see…”
His heavenly glory is described as overwhelming light.
Summary from the KJV
The Bible teaches:
God is Spirit → John 4:24
God is invisible → 1 Timothy 1:17
God speaks as a voice → Deut. 4:12
God appears in fire/cloud/glory → Exodus
God dwells in believers by His Spirit → 1 Cor. 3:16
God is glorious light → 1 John 1:5
The consistent teaching is that God’s essence is Spirit, but He reveals Himself in ways mankind can perceive—through voice, glory, fire, angelic manifestation, and indwelling Spirit.
Why is this important?
Understanding that God is a Spirit is important because it changes how we understand who He is, how He reveals Himself, and how we come to know Him. It teaches us that God is far greater than a physical being, and has the power to manifest Himself in different ways, so that we can relate to the experience that He is trying to teach us.
The Godhead
There is more to understand in the “Godhead,” however, I will leave that up to you to study and learn.
Is the Godhead all Three: God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit, in One, or are they all separate entities?
This is something that you need to discover on your own using the teachings of the Bible, and through prayer with God’s assistance.
I invite you to start learning as if you have never been taught about the nature of God. Learning truth from the beginning is a great deal easier when you start with a new sheet of paper, and NOT trying to learn something to defend what you currently believe. Be teachable. You study, and let the Holy Ghost led the way to discovering truth.
Try this… I know it works 100%, because I’ve spent the last three years doing exactly that…Starting over to learn the truth!
Follow truth, regardless of where it takes you, because I know for a fact that it will take you directly to the Gospel of Jesus Christ as written in the Bible.
Yes, I feel that the rapture is only a short time away, but there is still time to learn. I crave all truth! I want to know what our lives will be like after we leave this earth. Scripture gives us some insight. A treasure map if it were…Don’t you just love to learn each new clue? I do!
