Mormons Teach That They Can Become Gods and Goddesses—THIS Is OFFENSIVE to God Himself. Are There Consequences for Mocking God in Ways Such as This? – Let’s Investigate (KJV)

There are many unusual doctrines taught by religions throughout the world. Some are relatively harmless differences in tradition. Others strike directly at the identity, authority, and glory of Almighty God.

This article addresses one of the latter. Challenging the Identity, Authority, and Glory of God.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches that human beings can become like God, and Goddesses—That they can attain exaltation and godhood.

That statement is not anti-Mormon propaganda. It comes directly from the LDS Church, and is taught in temples daily throughout the world.

Its official Gospel Topics essay, “Becoming Like God,” says that men and women possess divine potential and can ultimately progress toward godliness. It acknowledges Joseph Smith’s teaching that human beings can advance like God and records his declaration that people must learn how to become gods. The same official essay acknowledges Lorenzo Snow’s famous teaching:

“As man now is, God once was: As God now is, man may be.”

But Doctrine and Covenants 132, Mormon Scripture, goes further. Its own LDS-produced introduction says celestial marriage enables men to become gods, and verses 19–20 declare concerning those receiving the promised exaltation:

“Then shall they be gods.”

The LDS Church’s current instructional manual likewise says eternal marriage is necessary to obtain “exaltation and godhood.”

So, there is no need to speculate about this certain Mormon doctrine topic. The declaration is not challenged by the church, but gladly accepted as truth. This is the focus of their religion. God was once a man – You can become a god as well.

Let’s simply compare that teaching with the King James Bible. That’s fair, right? If this is indeed the case, there must certainly be this teaching in the Gospel of Jesus Christ as recorded in the New Testament.

But hold on, it doesn’t make such a declaration. In fact, “God Himself Says There Will Be No Gods After Him”

There is one verse that presents an enormous problem for the LDS doctrine of godhood:

“Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: BEFORE ME THERE WAS NO GOD FORMED, NEITHER SHALL THERE BE AFTER ME.”
—Isaiah 43:10 (KJV)

Oh my!! How much clearer could God have made this?

Before Me—no God formed.

After Me—no God shall be formed.

Yet Joseph Smith taught that mankind can advance toward godhood. LDS scripture declares of certain exalted people:

“Then shall they be gods.”

Put the statements beside one another:

The LORD: “Neither shall there be any God’s after me.”

LDS scripture: “Then shall they be gods.”

Something is terribly wrong. These two teaching Do Not Match.

Both propositions cannot mean the same thing.

God Apparently Wanted This Question Settled

Perhaps someone will say Isaiah 43:10 is being misunderstood.

Then, let’s continue reading Isaiah.

“Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.”
—Isaiah 44:6

Then God asks the very question Mormon theology forces us to ask:

“Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any.”
—Isaiah 44:8

Think carefully about those words:

“I know not any.”

Are we supposed to believe Almighty God doesn’t know about an entire eternal order of beings who attain godhood?

Of course not.

God continues:

“I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me.”
—Isaiah 45:5

And again:

“I am the LORD, and there is none else.”
—Isaiah 45:6

And again:

“I am the LORD; and there is none else.”
—Isaiah 45:18

This isn’t one obscure verse upon which someone has built an argument.

God repeats Himself.

There is no God beside Him.

There was no God formed before Him.

There will be no God formed after Him.

God Has Always Been God

Joseph Smith’s theology presents another extraordinary difficulty.

The LDS Church’s own Gospel Topics essay acknowledges Joseph Smith’s teaching that God “was once as one of us” and that God established laws allowing others to advance like Himself.

Now compare that idea with:

“Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even FROM EVERLASTING TO EVERLASTING, THOU ART GOD.”
—Psalm 90:2

Scripture doesn’t say:

From mortality until everlasting, Thou eventually became God.

It says:

“From everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.”

The God revealed in the Bible isn’t a former mortal who successfully climbed the ladder of eternal progression.

He is God from everlasting to everlasting.

Now, here is a teaching that most members of the church do not realize…Does BELIEVING that they can become Gods and Goddess Offend God? This is where the issue becomes much more serious than theological curiosity. I invite you to buckle up right here for a moment…

God says:

“I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another.”
—Isaiah 42:8

And again:

“I will not give my glory unto another.”
—Isaiah 48:11

Let’s back up for just a moment. The First Promise of a person Becoming “As Gods” Should Concern Us

In the Garden of Eden, the serpent told Eve:

“For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and YE SHALL BE AS GODS, knowing good and evil.”
—Genesis 3:5

Every Bible-believing Christian should at least be troubled by the parallel that the Garden of Eden has with the teachings in the Mormon temple that Man can become Gods.

The serpent’s temptation involved:

“Ye shall be as gods.”

God later declares:

“Beside me there is no God.”

And:

“Neither shall there be after me.”

Those statements deserve to be taken very seriously.

Is This Mocking God?

The Bible uses remarkably strong language about treating God lightly.

Paul writes:

“Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”
—Galatians 6:7

God is not to be mocked.

There are consequences for treating the Almighty as though His declarations can simply be rewritten.

When God says there will be no God after Him, I would be extremely reluctant to stand before Him someday having taught people, or even believing yourself that they themselves could become Gods.

That isn’t a small doctrinal disagreement.

It concerns who God is.

The Sin of Pride Began with satan Wanting God’s Position

Isaiah records another sobering statement:

“For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God…”
—Isaiah 14:13

And:

“I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.”
—Isaiah 14:14

Then comes God’s answer:

“Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.”
—Isaiah 14:15

The principle here is unmistakable:

Aspiring to God’s position is not presented in Scripture as mankind’s glorious destiny.

Satan made that same declaration, that he was going to be God, and what was the consequence for HIM? He was brought down to hell!

Are YOU making that same claim, that YOU are going to be a god or goddess?

If so, can we make the assumption that your consequence would be the same as what God has shared with us regarding satan?

Do you realize who you are mocking by making such a claim? To make a declaration that goes against what GOD HIMSELF actually declared three different times in scripture, that He is the one and only God that has ever been or ever will be?

Nothing can erase God’s explicit declaration in Psalms 82:

“Before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.”

And if a false prophet teaches something concerning God that contradicts God’s previous revelation, Scripture tells us what to do:

“Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.”
—1 Thessalonians 5:21

Specific to an ANGEL teaching additional doctrine, we have also received very clear warning…

Galatians 1:8–9 (KJV). Paul specifically says:

“But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.”

That distinction actually makes the passage especially significant when comparing competing claims about the Gospel of salvation: Even an angel from heaven does not have authority to replace, or ADD TO the Gospel already preached by Jesus Christ and His apostles while they were on the earth..

You can read the LDS Church’s own explanation. Don’t rely upon me. The Church openly acknowledges Joseph Smith’s teaching concerning becoming gods and his teaching that God was once as mankind is.

Did Almighty God teach that His children will someday become additional Gods and Goddesses?

Or did He say:

“BEFORE ME THERE WAS NO GOD FORMED, NEITHER SHALL THERE BE AFTER ME.”

There are so many people who fail to recognize the false teachings of the adversary. They have been caught in the nets of deception, and don’t even realize it.

And in the meantime, satan is cleverly, in the name of religion, causing people to openly mock God, like puppets, making such declarations that they too can become a God.

This devalues God’s authority, suggesting that anyone else can do the same thing. “God’s power is really no big deal; even I can do this.” God will NOT be mocked. This is a serious declaration that perhaps many don’t even realize the severity of what they are doing.

Like the story of the Trojan Horse, the adversary was snuck into some religions in a cleaver way, teaching just enough truth, so that he can insert several of the most important lies…

”Baptism and Conformation” is what it means to be Born Again.

“You can become a god and goddess”

Salvation is only possible after, “all that we can do.”

“The prophet will never lead you astray”

“If you don’t pay tithing, you will be burned at His coming.”

“You need a temple sealing to be together forever in the presence of God.”

“The Second Anointing will assure a person of exaltation.”

“Tithing only counts when it’s paid directly to the church.”

“You should only Believe US!”

“Questioning the church shows lack of faith.”

“Even if you receive a different personal revelation from God, you should always follow the prophet.”

“The Mormon church is the ONLY true church on the earth.”

“Joseph Smith RESTORED the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”

I have come to know that this one word is one of the greatest deceptions of the church. He did not restore it; he CHANGED it DRAMATICALLY!

For those of us who study end times prophecy, we have learned that deception will be exposed in the last days:

12:2–3 (KJV)

“For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known.
Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.”

Mark 4:22:

“For there is nothing hid, which shall not be manifested; neither was any thing kept secret, but that it should come abroad.”

“Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts.”
—1 Corinthians 4:5

I am forever grateful that my deceptive religion has been exposed by God, so that I can come to know the true Gospel of Jesus Christ as He taught when He was on the earth.

And, in doing what he has asked of me, I have no problem “proclaiming it from the housetops!”

He has promised us that these deceptive secrets will be exposed as they have. Now it’s up to the members of this church to see what God is showing them. Will you follow HIM, or will you continue to stay in the comfortable couch of your false religion. The decision, as well as the unchangeable consequences, now lie in your hands. I invite you to go to Him in prayer, and let Him assist you in your journey towards truth.

John 8:31–32 (KJV):

“If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
