A Dramatic Storm in Utah – An End Times Warning? It Certainly Felt Like It – What We Can Learn from Dramatic Weather Events Regarding the End Times (KJV)

As I sat in my study yesterday, a storm began to develop outside that soon caught my attention.

The skies outside began to darken, as the lightning flickered. I could hear the thunder from a distance, and I had a sense that something big was coming.

Things intensified quite quickly, as the thunder rattled our home. The rain came down sideways, until it was not coming down in droplets, but rather, the heavens opened up and sheets of water dramatically fell to the ground.

Three inches of rain came down in a matter of 45 minutes. The street became a river of flowing water, which I had never experienced from a storm before.

The sound changed, and it was as if someone was throwing rock at our house, and the hail pounded everything in its path.

My phone and house alarm began beeping, with two different warnings, one was obvious as a sever storm warning which I was looking at out of my window, then a second one.. A Tornado warning. A TORNADO?? This is Utah, and tornadoes are something that none of us ever prepare for.

The alert was for my town that I am living in, so to me this became another ADVENTURE.

I went outside under our porch so that I could experience this storm close up. The sounds were incredible, and the sheer power of the storm was quite impressive.

The clouds in the sky were so dramatic, and moving very quickly. They were going in many different directions. I sat in awe of God’s power. I felt very insignificant compared to the storm that was raging all around me.

I recall thinking that in the midst of the storm, nothing else mattered. What was happening commanded everyone’s full attention. As busy as everyone was for the day, I’m certain that all they were thinking about was the storm raging outside, and ensuring that they were all in a safe place, as well as caring for those that they loved.

A tornado did touch down a few miles away, up on a near mountain. Pictures were popping up on social media, as well as others first hand account of the storm.

And then…As quickly as it came…It was soon over. Chaos to peace. Destruction to something so beautiful, it took my breath away.

Two very different extremes: Destruction, then Peace and Beauty.

I couldn’t stop looking at what I was seeing. It felt like something much more than just a rainbow. It seemed as though it was something very personal that was sent by God Himself. A PROMISE of sorts, that other events were all a part of His plan as it relates to the end times prophecies that we are all about to enter into.

Communication buzzed after the storm, as people began to share their experiences of what they had just witnesses. A friend from two miles away send me this picture of the hail stones that damaged all of His vehicles:

But as I looked back upon everything that had just happened, my thoughts moved beyond the storm itself.

What could we learn from it?

I cannot say that God sent this particular storm as a specific end-times warning. But I can say that what I witnessed gave me a remarkable picture of truths God has already revealed in His Word.

For about an hour, our ordinary lives simply stopped.

Nobody cared about what was on television. Nobody cared about tomorrow’s schedule. Nobody cared about the little disagreements that seemed important earlier in the day. When the tornado warning sounded and the sky became violent, suddenly there was only one concern:

Are the people I love safe?

Perhaps there is an end-times lesson in that.

GOD HAS WARNED THAT A DAY IS COMING WHEN EVERYTHING WILL CHANGE

Jesus described a world continuing with ordinary life right up until judgment arrived:

“For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,
And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.”
— Matthew 24:38–39 (KJV)

That passage felt different to me after experiencing this storm.

An hour before it arrived, people were simply living their lives. Driving cars. Working. Shopping. Eating dinner. Looking at their phones.

Then suddenly the alerts began sounding.

WARNING.

Everything else became secondary.

That is one of the great messages of biblical prophecy. God has given mankind warnings before the events arrive.

Jesus said:

“And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.”
— Luke 21:28 (KJV)

The purpose of prophecy is not to terrify those who belong to Christ. It is to tell us beforehand what is coming so that we will recognize the season and place our trust in Him.

THE POWER OF GOD

Perhaps the greatest lesson I personally received from the storm was simply a reminder of how incredibly powerful God is.

Standing underneath my porch while thunder shook the house, hail crashed against the ground, water flooded the street and enormous clouds raced across the sky, I felt very small.

Scripture describes that feeling beautifully:

“The voice of the LORD is upon the waters: the God of glory thundereth: the LORD is upon many waters.
The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is full of majesty.”
— Psalm 29:3–4 (KJV)

We sometimes speak about the judgments described in Revelation as though they are impossible.

How could the earth experience such tremendous events?

Then nature gives us a tiny demonstration of the forces that already exist within God’s creation.

A thunderstorm can stop a city.

An earthquake can move the ground beneath millions of people.

A hurricane can move an ocean onto dry land.

A tornado can destroy a building within seconds.

And Revelation describes events far beyond anything I witnessed yesterday.

Yet the God who controls creation is infinitely greater than creation itself.

JESUS WARNED OF A TROUBLED WORLD

Jesus also told His disciples that the period leading toward His return would be characterized by turmoil:

“For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
All these are the beginning of sorrows.”
— Matthew 24:7–8 (KJV)

Luke records:

“And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring.”
— Luke 21:25 (KJV)

This does not mean that every tornado, hailstorm, earthquake or hurricane is individually a prophetic fulfillment. Storms have occurred throughout human history.

But they can certainly remind us of something Scripture says repeatedly:

This present world is not permanent.

There is a culmination coming.

AND THEN CAME THE RAINBOW

This was the part of yesterday that affected me most.

The storm disappeared almost as quickly as it arrived.

The thunder stopped.

The hail stopped.

The rain slowed.

And suddenly, stretching across the sky was one of the most beautiful rainbows I have ever witnessed.

Then I saw something even more remarkable.

It was a double rainbow.

The contrast was extraordinary.

Minutes earlier I had been watching violent weather and wondering whether a tornado might actually be approaching our neighborhood.

Now I was staring at brilliant colors stretching from one horizon to another.

Judgment imagery followed by the symbol of a promise.

Immediately my thoughts went to Genesis:

“I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.”
— Genesis 9:13 (KJV)

God established the rainbow after the Flood as the sign of His covenant concerning the waters of the Flood.

Yesterday’s rainbow was not a new covenant or a new prophecy specifically given to me. But standing there looking at it, I could not help being reminded of the covenant God had already placed in Scripture thousands of years ago.

And perhaps that distinction is important.

We don’t need God to give us a new prophecy in the clouds. He has already given us His Word.

The rainbow simply caused me to remember it.

FROM THE STORM TO PEACE

There is another beautiful biblical picture here.

Psalm 107 says:

“He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.”
— Psalm 107:29 (KJV)

That was almost exactly what I had witnessed.

Chaos.

Then calm.

Darkness.

Then light.

Fear.

Then beauty.

And suddenly I began thinking about the entire end-times story.

When we study Revelation, it is very easy to become consumed with the storm.

The seals.

The trumpets.

The Antichrist.

The mark of the beast.

Armageddon.

Judgment.

But Revelation does not end with the storm.

That is incredibly important.

It ends with Jesus Christ victorious.

It ends with Satan defeated.

It ends with death defeated.

It ends with God dwelling with His people.

John writes:

“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”
— Revelation 21:4 (KJV)

Perhaps we who study prophecy need to remember this more often.

The storm is not the destination. Christ is.

WHAT YESTERDAY TAUGHT ME

For months many of us have watched world events intensely. We have studied prophecy. We have wondered about timing. We have looked toward the sky and wondered how close we might be to the return of Jesus Christ.

Sometimes that watching becomes exhausting. Yesterday reminded me of something simpler. I don’t have to know exactly when the storm is coming. I need to know where my shelter is.

And spiritually, my shelter isn’t my ability to correctly calculate prophetic dates. It isn’t my understanding of Revelation. It isn’t belonging to the correct denomination. It isn’t my works.

My refuge is Jesus Christ.

Psalm 46 begins:

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea.”
— Psalm 46:1–2 (KJV)

That may have been the greatest lesson of the entire afternoon.

PERHAPS THE MESSAGE IS SIMPLER THAN WE THINK

I don’t know whether yesterday’s storm had any special prophetic significance. But I know what it caused me to remember. God is powerful. Life can change incredibly quickly. His warnings should be taken seriously. His promises can be trusted. And Jesus Christ remains our refuge.

The storm commanded everyone’s attention for a little while. Then came the rainbow.

And as I stood looking at that magnificent bow stretching across the Utah sky, I found myself thinking about what awaits those who belong to Christ after all of the turmoil described in Scripture has finally passed.

One day the greatest storm this world has ever experienced will also be over. And what comes afterward will make yesterday’s rainbow look pale by comparison.

“And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new.”
— Revelation 21:5 (KJV)

The storm is coming. But never forget what comes after the storm.

For those who are in Jesus Christ, the final message of Bible prophecy is not fear.

It is hope.

I thank God for my experience yesterday, in witnessing His hands in something so spiritual obvious for me. A “Field Trip” into witnessing the power that He has, as well as the beautiful promise that the gospel gives us,

The vibrant colors of the rainbow spark an interest in me to see the new world tht God will create for us. Can you even imagine what Heaven will look like, Beauty that actually speaks to us in a grand fashion. Something so specular that I could not walk away, until it faded back into where it came.

Danger produces the need for faith. Things that are out of our control produce a place for us to turn to, something that is bigger than ourselves, our government, or any “bunker” or physical structure.

Psalm 46:1–3:

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof.”

Psalm 91:2:

“I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.”

As a person who has actually been struck by lightning and lived, I am not afraid of the storms in life, because I witnessed first hand that I can be protected from the “dangers of the storm.” I think of that experience often, and each time, it gives me renewed confidence of knowing who my protector really is, and how blessed I have been by placing my trust in Him.

I can not even begin to tell you how many storms that I have placed myself in, for I have grown to love to experience, first hand, the POWER of God. It is so humbling, so adventurous, and so powerful.

When your life becomes too comfortable, and you perhaps begin to drift away from realizing the importance of God in your life, I invite you to place yourself in the middle of a violent storm, and let God teach you some things to get you back on track.

We all have been genetically programmed to always seek shelter from a storm immediately. I understand this LOGIC, but sometimes in doing so, we miss some important teachings that storms in our life can provide.

We try to quickly pray our life’s problems away as quickly as we can, to avoid difficulty, but that is not God’s intent for the majority of times. He is giving us storms to teach us, to help us GROW, and to become closer to Him. When you know that you need Him, you have been taught the very lesson of the storm. I invite you to get there if you are in the midst of something difficult right now.

He gives us this instruction to resolve all of our “storms”…

Matthew 11:28–30 KJV:

28 “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

29 “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.”

30 “For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

As you look around the world, you can see that the Birth Pains of the end times increasing. Just in considering weather, earthquakes, tornados, and hurricanes…God is trying to get the attention of the world. Are you listening?

I invite you to look at these storms through your spiritual eyes. See the power that God has. Respect it, and know that when He actually judges the earth, this power will be beyond that which we have yet seen. We are not in charge, He is. And He is about to show many people who think otherwise, just that very fact.

For those of you who are “in Christ” we do not need to fear His power, but it is important for us to realize the power that he has and respect it. He will also be using that same POWER to protect us, which should bring us peace and comfort rather than fear.

I am indeed grateful to belong to God as His child. We belong to the most powerful entity ever imaginable.
