THE LAST ORDINARY DAY – What Will People Be Doing Just Hours Before the Rapture? (KJV)

It will be on a final ordinary morning when the coming of Jesus Christ will occur.

Alarm clocks will still ring. People will hurry to work. Children will go to school. Someone will propose marriage. Someone will sign papers on a new home. Someone will make plans for next year. Stores will open, airplanes will take off, traffic will fill the highways, and millions of people will stare at their phones—having absolutely no idea how suddenly everything will change.

Perhaps one of the most fascinating things Jesus taught about the time surrounding His coming is not merely what people will see, but what they will be doing.

Jesus takes us back to two previous judgments: the days of Noah and the days of Lot. And His description is strikingly ordinary.

Luke 17:26–27 (KJV):

“And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.
They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all.”

Notice what Jesus emphasizes.

They were eating.

They were drinking.

They were getting married.

None of those activities is unusual. In fact, that appears to be part of the point. Life continued right up until judgment arrived.

Then Jesus gives us another example.

Luke 17:28–30 (KJV):

“Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded;
But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.
Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.”

Again, look carefully at the activities Jesus lists.

They bought.

They sold.

They planted.

They built.

These are the activities of people who expect tomorrow to come.

Why plant something if you believe there will be no harvest?

Why build something if you believe you will never live in it?

Why buy and sell if you believe the present world is about to be interrupted?

Jesus paints a picture of civilization continuing normally while the overwhelming majority of people remain occupied with ordinary life.

And then comes perhaps the most sobering phrase in the entire passage:

“But the same day…”

Not eventually.

Not after society completely collapsed.

Not necessarily after everyone recognized what was happening.

The same day.

Lot walked out.

Judgment came down.

THE WORLD WILL NOT LOOK LIKE IT IS ABOUT TO END

Many people imagine that immediately before the return of Christ, virtually everyone will recognize that something enormous is about to happen.

But Scripture gives us reason to question that assumption.

Jesus said:

Matthew 24:37–39 (KJV):

“But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,
And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away…”

Those words deserve careful attention:

“And knew not until…”

There came a moment when the warning period ended and reality began. For years Noah had prepared the ark. Hebrews tells us that Noah acted by faith:

Hebrews 11:7 (KJV):

“By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house…”

Imagine watching Noah build that enormous vessel while the skies remained unchanged.

Day after day passed. Nothing happened. Perhaps weeks became months and months became years. Still no flood.

To an unbelieving observer, Noah’s warning might have appeared less convincing with every ordinary sunrise. Until one sunrise was different. God had done something extreme.

THE DOOR WAS SHUT

There is another detail in Noah’s account that becomes especially powerful when considered alongside the coming of Christ.

Genesis 7:16 (KJV):

“…and the LORD shut him in.”

Noah did not shut that door. God did.

There was therefore a period when the ark was available—and then there came a moment when the door was closed.

That immediately brings to mind another warning Jesus gave. In the parable of the ten virgins, the Bridegroom appeared unexpectedly after a delay:

Matthew 25:5–6 (KJV):

“While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.
And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.”

Then the prepared entered with Him.

Matthew 25:10 (KJV):

“…and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut.”

There it is again. The door was shut. In Noah’s day, there was a door. In the parable of the Bridegroom, there was a door.

And in both accounts, there was a period of opportunity followed by a decisive moment.

This is why the question is not merely whether we can recognize prophetic signs. The deeper question is:

Are we ready?

Paul gives another fascinating description:

1 Thessalonians 5:2–3 (KJV):

“For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.
For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them…”

Notice the word:

“sudden.”

A thief does not normally send an appointment notice. He comes when the household does not expect him.

Paul continues:

1 Thessalonians 5:4 (KJV):

“But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.”

There is therefore an important difference between being uninformed of the exact moment and being spiritually asleep.

Christians are commanded to watch. But watching does not mean that we are promised knowledge of the exact day or hour.

Jesus said plainly:

Matthew 24:44 (KJV):

“Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.”

That verse contains a profound lesson. The command is not:

“Figure out the hour.”

The command is:

“Be ye also ready.”

THE RAPTURE ITSELF WILL BE SUDDEN

Paul describes the gathering of believers:

1 Thessalonians 4:16–17 (KJV):

“For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”

Paul describes the transformation elsewhere:

1 Corinthians 15:51–52 (KJV):

“Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump…”

“In a moment.”

“In the twinkling of an eye.”

There will not be an opportunity in that instant to reconsider a lifetime of unbelief.

There will not be time to finish investigating Jesus.

There will not be a time to say, “Give me five more minutes.”

The transformation itself is described as astonishingly fast.

WHAT IF NOTHING UNUSUAL HAPPENS THAT MORNING?

This may be the most interesting possibility of all. What if the final morning before the Rapture does not feel prophetic? What if there is no unmistakable worldwide announcement? What if you wake up, look outside, and everything appears normal?

Perhaps the ordinary appearance of that day would itself fit Christ’s warning remarkably well.

Because the defining characteristic of the last ordinary day would not necessarily be that everyone knew it was the last one. It would be that almost nobody did.

THERE IS SOMETHING MORE IMPORTANT THAN KNOWING THE DATE

There is a question far more important than know the exact date and time. It is:

“Do I belong to Jesus Christ?”

Salvation is not found in correctly solving the prophetic calendar. It is not found in belonging to the right denomination. It is not earned through religious ceremonies or accumulated good works.

Salvation is found in Jesus Christ.

John 3:16 (KJV):

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

And:

Romans 10:9 (KJV):

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”

And:

Ephesians 2:8–9 (KJV):

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

That is the message we should be shouting louder than any proposed prophetic date.

Know Jesus Christ.

SOMEDAY, IT REALLY WILL BE THE LAST ORDINARY DAY

For nearly two thousand years, Christians have watched for the return of Jesus Christ. Generation after generation has lived and died. Morning has followed morning. Year has followed year. And skeptics naturally ask:

“Where is He?”

Peter anticipated precisely that question.

2 Peter 3:9 (KJV):

“The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”

What looks like delay may actually demonstrate the patience and mercy of God. Another ordinary day means another opportunity for someone to hear the Gospel. Another opportunity for someone to open a Bible. Another opportunity for someone to call upon Jesus Christ.

Another opportunity for someone who has spent an entire lifetime running from God to finally turn toward Him.

But eventually, one ordinary day really will be the last ordinary day. One generation really will be alive when the trumpet sounds. One group of believers really will fulfill Paul’s extraordinary words:

“Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds…”

Do you realize that our generation is that very group?

You and me simply need to take seriously the words He gave us:

“Therefore be ye also ready.”

So tomorrow morning, if the alarm clock rings and everything still looks completely ordinary, it will be on a completely ordinary morning will be the day of the rapture.

Remember Noah.

Remember Lot.

Remember the virgins waiting for the Bridegroom.

Remember the shut door.

Remember the thief in the night.

A morning that looks completely ordinary—until suddenly it isn’t!
