For those of you who have been studying the Gospel of Jesus Christ, as written in the Bible, you are aware of the Judgment Seat of Christ. This will immediately start right after the Rapture, and will conclude at the end of the Seven Year Tribulation period, allowing those who have come to Christ during those 7 years to be included in this judgment.
You are also aware that we will not be judged based upon our sins, for we haven’t any. They have all been washed away through the incredible gift that has been given to us from Christ, and that we have received through our spiritual rebirth of being Born Again. That gift? The atonement of Jesus Christ.
At this time of Judgment, here’s what we have been taught:
“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.“
— 2 Corinthians 5:10, KJV
Alright, so during this time, out life’s “things that we have done both good and bad will be considered. The word “bad” does not necessarily mean sinful or wicked acts. The Greek word translated bad (phaulos) can carry the idea of something worthless, unprofitable, empty, or of no eternal value.
Examples might include:
- Spending your life pursuing things that have no eternal significance.
- Wasting opportunities God gave you to serve others.
- Living entirely for comfort, entertainment, or worldly success while neglecting God’s purposes.
- Doing good deeds for recognition rather than for Christ.
- Activities that were not sinful in themselves, but produced no lasting fruit for God’s kingdom.
Does this help you understand this scripture?
We also know at the time of this judgment, Jesus will present “Crowns” to many present. All of what we have done on this earth will be judged by Christ during this judgment.
Today’s insight is to discover what those crowns of glory are, as well as something very important that has also been taught – “The Refining Fire”, which will identify those qualifying actions performed upon this earth that are deserving of a “CROWN.”
Let’s first learn about what these crowns that Jesus will present at this judgment:
1. Crown of Life
For those who endure trials and remain faithful to Christ.
James 1:12 (KJV)
“Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.”
Revelation 2:10 (KJV)
“Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.”
2. Crown of Righteousness
For those who love and eagerly await Christ’s appearing.
2 Timothy 4:8 (KJV)
“Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.”
3. Crown of Glory
For faithful shepherds and leaders who care for God’s people.
1 Peter 5:2-4 (KJV)
“Feed the flock of God which is among you… And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.”
4. Incorruptible Crown
For believers who exercise spiritual discipline and faithfully run the Christian race.
1 Corinthians 9:25 (KJV)
“And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.”
5. Crown of Rejoicing (Soul-Winner’s Crown)
Associated with bringing others to Christ and rejoicing in their salvation.
1 Thessalonians 2:19 (KJV)
“For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?”
Philippians 4:1 (KJV)
“My brethren dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and crown…”
These are the CROWNS which are taught in the writings of the Bible. There certainly might be even more that what has been revealed, however, it is important that we understand this entire “Reward System” that God has in place, as well as this entire gospel teaching.
Many people get caught up in false teachings through their religion regarding how God processes our “Good Works.” Teachings that we will go to different heavens based upon our works is certainly one that I am fimilure with, as this was what I was taught. But let’s pause here for a moment and consider the TRUE gospel teachings.
We KNOW that all who have accepted Jesus Christ’s atonement will go to “heaven,” and will forever be with the Lord, as taught in this rapture scripture:
1 Thessalonians 4:16–17 (KJV)
16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
So then, all who are at the Judgment Seat of Christ will go to the place where Jesus Christ will dwell, and they will ALWAYS be with Him, just as the scripture states.
Can Jesus be in three different heavens? (I’ll let you pray about that one and come to your own conclusion.)
But Good Works certainly must count for something, right? And, all of us know that even between good Christian people, their good works vary. Some are “overachievers” and some rarely do good works at all. So how will our FAIR God deal with this difference? The answer – Rewarding Crowns!
We will all be with Jesus Christ in heaven, this is precise fact, exactly the same for everyone there, because of the atonement of Jesus Christ. What will be different will come through our judgments from what we have done on earth, good and bad, and will be recognized by these crowns from Jesus Christ that we are learning about today.
There are several more very important aspects of this gospel principle. Stick with me as we continue to learn about them.
The Refining Fire
1 Corinthians 3:12–15 (KJV)
“Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;
Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.
If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.”
Notice that the fire tests “what sort” of work it is, not merely how much was done. God examines the motive, faithfulness, sincerity, and whether the work was done for Christ’s glory.
What Might Be Burned?
The “wood, hay, and stubble” can represent works done:
- For personal recognition.
- Out of pride.
- To impress others.
- Without faith or dependence upon Christ.
- Merely as religious activity without genuine love for God.
Even good-looking works can be burned if they were done from the wrong motive.
What Survives the Fire?
The “gold, silver, and precious stones” represent works done:
- Out of love for Christ.
- Through faith and obedience.
- In humility.
- For God’s glory rather than our own.
- Empowered by the Holy Spirit.
These works remain and are rewarded.
These Crowns Will Then Be Cast Before Christ
Please ponder this aspect of the teaching. Even understanding that the reward for doing good works is to receive crowns from Jesus Christ, our motive is not to receive these crowns for our own gain. Once we receive those crowns, they will be “returned” to Jesus Christ as a testament that we realize even our very best sacrifices or accomplishments are because of Jesus Christ, and it is He that deserves the “GLORY.”
I know that some of you will immediately understand what I am sharing. For the others, please include God in this teaching and continue your learning about this.
Here is that gospel teaching.
Revelation 4:10-11 (KJV)
“The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne… and cast their crowns before the throne, saying,
Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power…”
We recognize that we have accomplished our best “works” because of Jesus Christ, and not because of our own abilities.
What Happens to the Crowns?
The highest purpose of the crowns may be that they become something we can lay at the feet of Jesus in gratitude for what He has done for us.
The refining fire is therefore not a fire of condemnation for the born-again believer. It is Christ’s perfect evaluation of our lives. Salvation remains secure, but rewards are tested. The fire removes everything that was done apart from Him and reveals what was truly done for His glory. That is why Paul could say:
“Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him.”
— 2 Corinthians 5:9 (KJV)
Do These Crowns Give A Person Additional Responsibilities in Heaven?
The Bible does not clearly state that the crowns themselves grant additional authority or responsibility. However, Scripture does connect faithfulness on earth with greater responsibility in Christ’s kingdom.
For example, Jesus taught:
“And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities.”
— Luke 19:17 (KJV)
And:
“His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant… I will make thee ruler over many things.”
— Matthew 25:21 (KJV)
These passages suggest that faithful service now can result in greater responsibilities in the future kingdom.
At the same time, crowns are also presented as honors and rewards. This indicates that crowns ultimately bring glory to Christ rather than personal exaltation.
One beautiful thought is that the greatest reward is not the crown itself, but hearing:
“Well done, thou good and faithful servant.”
— Matthew 25:21 (KJV)
The crown is precious because it comes from the hand of the Savior whom we love. The greatest joy of heaven will not be what we receive, but that we will be with Jesus Christ forever.
“And so shall we ever be with the Lord.”
— 1 Thessalonians 4:17 (KJV)
I am so grateful for the scriptures and the teachings which they provide to us. For many years, I have simply thought that I would have wait until I died, to find out what things will be like after I leave this earth. I had no idea that many answers were already here upon the earth, and that all I had to do was to open the Bible and study, with the help of God.
I use this scripture often…
John 8:32 (KJV):
“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
It is so important to me because it describes the past three years of my life. After being deceived by my religion with false teachings, I sought out to learn the TRUTH of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
In learning the TRUTH, I have received a “freedom” that I had never experienced in all of my life.
I KNOW that I will be Raptured.
I KNOW that I will attend the Judgment Seat of Christ, fearing no concern for my past sins.
I know that Jesus will heal me, during the millennial period, from all of the challenges that I have experienced in my lifetime. Many of those are still open emotional wounds. I anxiously await this day.
I KNOW that I will forever be in the presence of the Lord. This is the freedom that I have found through the TRUTH!
I realize that time is short. I am committed to continue writing, up until the very day that I am “caught up”.
Please let me know in the comments, if there is anything that you would like me to “investigate” in the teachings of the scriptures, and I will be happy to get after it!
Sending all of my love to each of you!
