From the moment we are born, our minds begin collecting information — from parents, teachers, peers, and the society around us. Over time, these influences form what we believe about life, morality, purpose, and even God. Among the most powerful of these influences is religious programming — the deeply ingrained set of beliefs and behaviors passed down through religious authority, tradition, and repetition.
Religious programming can serve both a noble purpose and a dangerous deception. On one hand, faith communities can nurture compassion, discipline, and moral integrity. On the other, when doctrines are accepted without personal examination or prayerful discernment, religion can become a mechanism of control rather than a path to truth.
The Subtle Nature of Conditioning
Programming doesn’t always come in the form of overt manipulation. Often, it’s subtle — woven into songs, prayers, lessons, and rituals. From childhood, we’re told what to believe about God, heaven, and salvation, and over time those teachings become part of our identity. Questioning them can feel like rebellion, or even sin. This emotional attachment to inherited belief systems is what makes religious programming so powerful — and so difficult to break free from.
When leaders declare that obedience equals righteousness, or that salvation depends on loyalty to an institution rather than to Christ Himself, people often follow without question. Over time, fear replaces faith, and reverence for God becomes tangled with submission to men.
The Biblical Warning
The Bible warns repeatedly about blind faith in human authority. Jesus Himself rebuked the religious leaders of His day, saying,
“This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.”
— Matthew 15:8–9, KJV
Here, Christ revealed a timeless truth: religious programming can make people think they’re serving God while actually following man-made traditions. The danger lies not in belief itself, but in believing without discernment.
Breaking the Cycle
Freedom from religious programming begins when a believer chooses to seek truth directly from the Word of God — without filters, hierarchies, or traditions dictating what it must mean. Jesus said,
“Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
— John 8:32, KJV
To be made free means to have one’s eyes opened — to realize that true faith is not about belonging to a specific denomination or obeying a religious institution. It’s about a personal, living relationship with Jesus Christ.
The Holy Spirit teaches, corrects, and comforts those who sincerely seek Him. As John wrote,
“But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you…”
— 1 John 2:27, KJV
This doesn’t mean we should reject all teachers or fellowship, but that we must measure every message by Scripture and by the Spirit of truth.
The Power of Renewal
Once the veil of programming begins to lift, many experience both pain and liberation. The pain comes from realizing how long they may have been misled; the liberation comes in discovering that God’s love was never confined to an institution.
Religious programming can be undone — not by rebellion, but by renewal. As believers surrender their assumptions and ask the Holy Spirit to guide them, their minds are transformed. What once felt like duty becomes devotion. What once felt like control becomes freedom.
The Successful Way Through
When I discovered the untruths that my religion was teaching to me, I was left dazed and a bit angry. How could people that I once trusted immensely flat out lie to me?
I was faced with a decision: Pick the religion apart by exposing all of their false teachings, or simply start NEW, and spend my time searching for the TRUTH. The latter made the most sense to me.
I honestly do not care to learn what is religiously false, for it serves no purpose to me. Rather, I have an incredible desire to learn the TRUTH, for this is what I have tried to seek my entire life.
I knew that Jesus Christ actually was on the earth, and while He was here, He taught His gospel, and fulfilled the sacred atonement. This was my answer. I would spend my entire focus, studying what Jesus Taught, as detailed in the Bible. I would start this study FRESH, without any preconceived ideas or teachings. And, most importantly, I would include God in my journey. I would prayerfully ask for clarification of the things that I was learning. He would be my editor! He would be my teacher… and He would be my conformation of truth. Most importantly, He is someone that I could trust. This was as refreshing as it gets, for I had just been burned by false leaders, I once trusted with EVERYTHING.
Letting Go
It is difficult to let go of a lifelong religion. There are MANY wonderful things that can be contained within the walls of the Chappel. The sense of community and love for other members was never the problem with the false teachings of the church. It was important for me to see things as they truly were… NOT ALL bad, nor ALL Good.
At first, I tried to continue attending my church, so that I would not loose the GOOD aspects of attending this church. I loved the people deeply.
But the more I studied what Jesus taught in the Bible, the louder the false teachings became. To hear members stand up to share their testimony, the religious programming was so evident. The “Talking Points” of what they declared to be true was a robotic reminder of how they had been deceived, programed, and conditioned to respond a certain way.
I could not have a calling or responsibility in the church, for the simple fact that I could not teach the history nor the doctrine of the church. It had become such an obvious lie to me.
I chose to let go.
“Even if the Church is Not True, there is No Better Way to Live”
I remember hearing this statement tossed around from members. I can somewhat agree in part to the positive experiences that I had as a youth, as well as serving in the church my entire life.
But when I can across some of the teachings of Jesus Christ in the Bible that were in conflict with the church, it helped me realize the danger that this statement actually holds. Participating in a religion simply because it gives me a sense of community, places me in a false feeling of security when it comes to my eternal salvation.
I’d like to share an alarming gospel principle with you to serve as an example to this danger.
One of the “Doctrines” of this church has to do with our salvation. Their teachings,
“…for we know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do.”
This is in stark opposition of the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 2:8–9 (KJV)
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.
This means salvation is entirely a gift from God, received through faith in Jesus Christ, not something we can earn by our own deeds or efforts.
Other supporting verses include:
- Romans 11:6 (KJV)
And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace.
- Titus 3:5 (KJV)
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.
Why the Difference Matters
Grace Produces Freedom; Works Produce Burden.
When we understand that salvation depends on grace, we rest in the finished work of Christ on the cross. If we think it depends on our own works, we live in constant anxiety — wondering if we’ve done enough to be saved. Grace frees us from that fear.
Grace Glorifies God; Works Glorify Self.
If salvation could be earned, we could boast about our goodness. But grace removes all pride. It keeps the focus where it belongs — on Jesus Christ and what He has done for us.
Grace Transforms the Heart; Works Only Change Behavior.
When we receive grace, the Holy Spirit changes us from the inside out. Good works then become a fruit of salvation, not the root of it (James 2:17). We do good works because we are saved, not to be saved.
Grace Provides Assurance; Works Breed Doubt.
Grace gives us confidence in God’s promises — that those who believe in Christ “have everlasting life” (John 3:16). Works-based religion leaves people uncertain, never knowing if they’ve measured up.
In Closing
Religious programming has immense power — it can shape entire nations, define cultures, and influence millions of hearts. It ALWAYS seems to surprise the individual who has become caught up in this deceptive programming, that it actually happened to them. They can not see it as being so, until they start to navigate away from it, and closer to the truthfulness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ as taught in the Bible.
Christ calls us not to blind obedience, but to spiritual awakening — a journey from tradition to truth, from fear to faith, and from religion to relationship. He has given us this direction:
1 Thessalonians 5:21 (KJV):
“Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.”
“Prove all things” — This means to test, examine, or discern everything carefully. The Apostle Paul was urging believers not to accept every teaching or prophecy blindly but to measure it against God’s Word and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. In other words, don’t just believe something because it sounds spiritual — test it for truth.
“Hold fast that which is good” — Once something has been tested and found to be true, righteous, and godly, hold onto it firmly. Keep it close to your heart and don’t let the world or false teachers shake your faith in it.
Together, the verse encourages spiritual discernment — to think critically, stay rooted in Scripture, and cling to what aligns with the character and truth of God. You are in charge of your spiritual development, not the church. Your relationship with God is DIRECT, and does not require the “middle man” of a church or religion.
I admonish ALL of you to consider…”Is your loyalty to your Religion, or is it to Your Savior Jesus Christ?” Just remember, your religion will be nowhere to be found when you die, for it will be just us and Jesus Christ.

Very good article. Well said my friend.
I am following the three step ” Let Go ” process to actually be free.
Step #1: Let Go of false religious teachings and false doctrines. ( It was hard, but completed )
Step #2: Let Go of all fake media lies and search for unbiased and truthful news and information. ( 90% Done )
Step #3: Let Go of the people who don’t love you or respect you. ( Difficult one to do, I came across this article and it explains what, how and why it needs to be done, it makes absolute sense. Currently working on this step )
