A Deep-Dive Into What Happened to Lucifer and WHY Evil Even Exists – It’s Helpful to Understand This

I’ve realized that most of my religious teaching throughout my life has not been true at all. Because of this, and the advancement of “knowledge” that is available today, I had a great desire to study and research where evil came from. We have all heard the story in the Old Testament, but today, let’s take a deep dive into understanding the FACTS about how evil came to be, and how it has progressed to the state that we are in today. Let’s begin with us as spirits.

HOW GOD CREATED SPIRITS – You and Me

In the beginning—long before the foundations of the earth—God, who is eternal and uncreated, brought into existence a vast order of beings we call spirits or angels. He did not “birth” them or mold them from pre-existing materials. He spoke, He willed, and they existed.

Psalm 148 describes creation calling on angels to praise God, placing them alongside sun, moon, and stars as things God made.
Hebrews 1:7 says: Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire.”
Colossians 1:16 says that all things… whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers” were created by Christ.

From these verses we learn:

1. God created spiritual beings by command of His will.

Not through process, not through evolution, not through reproduction. Simply by divine act.

2. They were created fully formed in knowledge and power—yet limited.

Angels do not grow up. They do not reproduce. They do not age.
They were created intelligent, moral, and free.

3. They were created good.

God does not create evil.
“And God saw everything that He had made, and, behold, it was very good.” (Genesis 1:31)

What about satan? Was He created just as a spirit or angle just like us?

This is a new teaching to me, however, it seems to fit in understanding some of the “higharchey” in heaven.

The Creation of Lucifer

God did NOT create a demon.
God created a holy, perfect angel—one of the highest beings ever made.

Ezekiel 28 (speaking both of the king of Tyre AND the spiritual being behind him) uses exalted language that fits no human:

  • “Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty.”
  • “Thou wast upon the holy mountain of God.”
  • “Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created…”

Isaiah 14 uses imagery of a glorious being called Lucifer—“light bearer.

From these passages, we learn:

1. Satan was originally a magnificent archangel.

Likely among the highest ranks (often associated with a “cherub”).

2. He had immense beauty, intelligence, and authority.

3. He was created perfect.

No corruption. No rebellion.

He also created OTHER Unique Angles

God did not create Satan as a lone exalted being; rather, He created an entire hierarchy of magnificent, powerful angels, each with unique glory and authority. Just as Satan was an “anointed cherub” of exceptional beauty and wisdom (Ezekiel 28:12–14), there were other high-ranking angels—such as Michael, one of the chief princes, and Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God—who were likewise created with extraordinary capacities.

Scripture speaks of “principalities,” “powers,” and “mighty angels,” revealing ranks of beings endowed with immense strength, intelligence, and responsibility. Though none equaled Satan’s specific appointment near the throne, many shared his nature as glorious, free-willed spirits capable of worship or rebellion. This is why a third of the angels were able to join him—they too possessed the same created freedom, dignity, and spiritual power that marked the highest orders of God’s heavenly host.

So, what happened to Lucifer? Why did he turn EVIL?

His fall came from within him—through pride.

Ezekiel 28:17 — “Thy heart was lifted up because of thy beauty.”

So, we’ve just learned that everything that God created was good. If satan was created good, and glorious, what happened?

Satan’s rebellion began with a choice—an act of free agency. God created all His angels, including Lucifer, with the ability to choose obedience or disobedience. Lucifer was originally a glorious being, but pride grew in his heart, and he chose to exalt himself rather than submit to God’s perfect will. In exercising his freedom to choose, he rejected the truth, sought God’s throne. (Isaiah 14:12–15; Revelation 12:3–4).

Satan fell not because God created evil, but because Lucifer used his God-given agency to choose evil. His rebellion stands as a sobering reminder that free will is a gift—and that every soul is accountable for the choices they make.

Evil is not a “thing.” Evil is the absence and rejection of God. God didn’t create evil; He created beings who were free enough to reject Him.

Isaiah 14 shows the five “I will” statements of his rebellion:

  • I will ascend into heaven
  • I will exalt my throne above the stars of God
  • I will sit on the mount of the congregation
  • I will ascend above the heights of the clouds
  • I will be like the Most High

This is the origin of evil—not because God created it, but because one of His creatures misused perfect free will and birthed rebellion.

Satan brought a third of the angels with him.

Revelation 12:4 describes the dragon’s tail sweeping a third of the stars (angels) into rebellion. Using the knowledge that we have just obtained, you can see how other “spirits” in heaven listened to Lucifer and were persuaded to rebel against God and choose to follow satan. They too have free agency, yet there is something very interesting that is very telling about the “war in heaven.”

The angels who followed Satan did not rebel out of ignorance—they stood in the full light of God’s glory, having seen His majesty, His power, and His holiness with perfect clarity. These beings lived in the direct presence of God, knew His voice, and understood His eternal purposes, yet pride led them to choose deception over truth.

In turning away from the Creator, they forfeited everything tied to their original design, including the destiny God intended for His loyal servants. Scripture says they “left their own habitation” (Jude 1:6), abandoning the estate He had assigned them, and in doing so they sealed their fate.

By joining Satan’s rebellion, they stepped outside the order of God’s plan and forever lost the privilege of entering into the purposes God reserves for obedient spirits—including the honor of taking part in His creations in embodied form. Their fall was not the mistake of the ignorant, but the tragic, irreversible choice of beings who knew God perfectly and yet turned from Him willingly.

Once fallen, they became demons—corrupted spirits. Their nature changed. Their destiny fixed. They will never be able to receive a mortal body. Can you go there for just a moment?!?

These angles had a perfect knowledge of truth. They knew and saw God. They knew His plan for all spirits who chose to follow Him. They knew that they would receive a physical body. They also knew that if they continued to follow Christ when they were on the earth, that they would live with God forever with a perfect body…in Happiness!!! Yet even with this perfect knowledge, they chose to follow satan. UNBELIEVABLE! But WHY?

The angels who fell did not choose Satan because he offered something better than God. They fell because he appealed to the only weakness even perfect beings can have when they possess free will: pride. Satan’s rebellion began with the desire to “be like the Most High” (Isaiah 14:14). When he whispered that ambition to the other angels, he awakened something deadly—the desire for self-exaltation. These angels were not tricked in darkness; they were persuaded in the very light of God’s glory. Satan convinced them that they deserved more authority, more honor, more freedom, more position than God had given them.

So, what POWERS do these fallen angles have over humans?

Fallen angels—demons—have real spiritual power, but it is limited, controlled by God, and no match for a believer filled with the Holy Spirit. Scripture gives a very clear picture of what they can do and what they cannot do.

Here is the full biblical breakdown.

1. They can tempt and deceive.

This is their primary weapon.

  • Satan is called “the tempter” (Matthew 4:3).
  • He is also “the father of lies” (John 8:44).
  • Revelation says he “deceives the whole world” (Rev. 12:9).

They whisper thoughts that sound like your own.
They twist Scripture.
They create doubt, fear, lust, pride, anger, and hopelessness.

But they cannot force you to sin. Temptation is influence, not control.

2. They can manipulate emotions and thoughts.

Ephesians 6:12 calls them “spiritual wickedness in high places.”

They can stir up:

  • anxiety
  • depression
  • confusion
  • irrational fear
  • bitterness
  • guilt
  • shame

They cannot read your mind, but they can influence it. They observe your weaknesses and attack them relentlessly.

3. They can create false religions and spiritual experiences.

1 Timothy 4:1 calls them “seducing spirits and doctrines of devils.”

They inspire:

  • false prophets
  • false visions
  • false signs and wonders
  • occult manifestations
  • counterfeit “angels of light” (2 Cor. 11:14)

Much of the end-times religious deception will come from these beings. I have seen this personally in my own life, having attended a church filled with deception, false prophets, and doctrine which is against the teachings that are in the bible. Relying upon my OWN works, rather than Christ’s gift of salvation.

4. They can oppress, harass, and torment.

Scripture shows demons can:

  • oppress people (Acts 10:38)
  • torment minds (Luke 8:29)
  • cause nightmares (Job 4:13–16)
  • stir violence and destruction (Mark 5:5)

Oppression is external pressure, not internal control. I have again personally observed this over the past several years. I have been tormented with everything that I have breaking down, and being engulfed by the emotion of frustration.

5. They can possess unbelievers.

Demons can enter and control those who do not belong to Christ.

Examples:

  • Legion (Mark 5)
  • The mute man (Matthew 9:32–33)
  • Judas (Luke 22:3)

Possession affects:

  • behavior
  • personality
  • physical abilities
  • mental state

But note carefully:

A Christian cannot be possessed.

The Holy Spirit and a demon cannot share the same temple (1 Cor. 6:19).
They can attack your mind—but not your spirit.

WHAT POWERS THEY DO NOT HAVE

1. They cannot force your will.

They influence but cannot override your choices.

2. They cannot read your thoughts.

Only God knows the heart (Jer. 17:10).

3. They cannot create life.

Only God has that power.

4. They cannot be everywhere.

They are powerful but not omnipresent.

5. They cannot touch you without God’s permission.

Job 1 proves this.
Their power is limited and supervised.

6. They cannot defeat a believer who resists them through Christ.

James 4:7:
“Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

Flee—not fight.
They cannot stand against the authority of Jesus.

HOW TO DEAL WITH DEMONS — THE BIBLICAL WAY

Demons are not impressed by emotions, rituals, shouting, or religious performance.
They respond to authority, not theatrics.

Here are the exact steps the Bible gives:

Submit to God FIRST.

Before resisting the devil, you must come under God’s covering.

James 4:7 (in perfect order):
“Submit yourselves therefore to God.
THEN resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

Speak the name of Jesus with authority.

Demons do not flee because you feel strong.
They flee because Jesus’ name carries legal power over them.

Philippians 2:10:
“At the name of Jesus every knee should bow… of things in heaven, on earth, and under the earth.”

Say it out loud:

“In the name of Jesus Christ, leave my presence.”

You command—because the authority is not yours, it’s His.

Remove their “legal rights.”

Demons seek permission, not random victims.

Common doorways:

  • unforgiveness
  • occult involvement
  • pornography
  • bitterness
  • gossip and slander
  • rage
  • spiritual passivity
  • fear and anxiety
  • habitual sin
  • certain objects linked to occultism

Close the doors. Repent. They lose ground instantly.

I hope that this information has helped you learn some things about how God would even allow evil to be a part of His Glorious Plan for all of us.

It has caused me great pause to consider something very powerful. You and ME made it past the “War in Heaven.” We did not fall due to our pride, nor through the deceptive tactics of satan. We remained firm in our belief in God’s plan for us. “I’M PROUD of US!!”

As I look back on my life and see all of the deception that has happened, I now know the reason why our lives have been filled with lies…It all has to do with satan and his angles who know nothing but lies. And in considering the disfunction and corruption of the world, you can see that by following this “Fallen Star” that his leadership only leads to the worst possible outcome ever.

Following Jesus Christ is filled with joy, happiness, and freedom. He wants us to succeed! He wants to give us all that He has, which in turn prompts us to mirror His teachings and life. I’m grateful to belong to Him. Once again, how can I ever repay Him for what He has done for all of us?

  1. really an excellent post, RW….and something I have been wondering about (again), lately….why ? how ? (evil)…I am still confused, however, because if the angels/cherubs were created by GOD as being “perfect and holy”, how would toxic pride (eg malignant narcissism) be an issue ? that seems like such a human condition…a fallen state…like sociopathy and psychopathy. This mystery of evil and how it got started, in the first place, and why , are some of the many questions I’ll have for Our Savior, One Fine Day 😊🙏 because I still can’t fully grasp it…going back to finish reading yr entire post now, maybe I commented too soon. ❤️

  2. As far as you being tormented and being frustrated at everything breaking, I feel your pain as that has been a big part of my life these past few years. you are speaking to your brother. We’ll have to share our stories when we get raptured, or sooner perhaps.

Great topic to discuss. Good insight. But, knowing me, I always have a few thousand more questions. If Lucifer was a high ranking angel, who tempted him ? How did he know that he could ascend higher than God our Father ? Did he figure that out himself or someone / something else whisper in his ear ?

Like I said, thousands of questions. I hope the Lord Jesus doesn’t get tired of me asking.
