Jesus said:
“But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.”
— Matthew 24:37 (KJV)
He went on:
“For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,
And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.”
— Matthew 24:38–39 (KJV)
I’m amazed at the lack of interest that people have when it comes to learning and preparing for the end times. Or Savior is days/weeks from returning to gather His church, and to some people, that is not even thought or consideration for them. Their minds are still focused upon the things of this world.
So, we’ve been told that their will be people who are not even considering that we are in the end times. What will happen to these people? Do the scriptures give us any insight as to what will happen to them?
Those who do not care that we are living in the end times will face the events of the Tribulation, for this is God’s plan. Jesus warned that many would be spiritually asleep—living life normally, ignoring God’s warnings—“until the flood came, and took them all away” (Matthew 24:38-39 KJV). The same pattern will repeat: people will dismiss the signs, mock the truth, and continue in sin, not realizing judgment is at the door.
For those who reject the warnings, Scripture says a terrible deception will overtake the world after the Rapture. Paul writes, “God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie” (2 Thessalonians 2:11 KJV). Because they “received not the love of the truth” (v.10), they will be swept into believing the Antichrist’s lies, thinking he is a savior rather than a destroyer.
During the Tribulation, those who ignored God will experience the full force of the judgments described in Revelation—war, famine, catastrophic disasters, persecution, and the rise of a one-world government and religion. Many will be forced to choose between following Christ or taking the mark of the beast (Revelation 13:16-17 KJV). The cost of choosing Christ will often be imprisonment or death, but the cost of choosing the Antichrist will be eternal separation from God.
Yet even in judgment, God shows mercy. Multitudes will wake up too late for the Rapture, but not too late for salvation. Revelation says there will be “a great multitude, which no man could number” who come to Christ during the Tribulation (Revelation 7:9-14 KJV). Many will finally see the truth because the judgments will shatter their denial, forcing them to face reality: God is real, the Bible is true, and eternity matters.
But those who continue to harden their hearts—those who still “do not care”—will face the final judgment. Revelation 20:11-15 (KJV) describes the Great White Throne, where all unbelievers are judged according to their works and cast into the lake of fire. God takes no pleasure in this, for He “is not willing that any should perish” (2 Peter 3:9 KJV), but He will honor the choice of those who refused Him.
In the end, indifference is not neutral—it is dangerous. Ignoring the times means being caught unprepared when Christ returns, swept into deception when the Antichrist rises, and facing judgment with no excuses left.
What Will Happen to a Believer in Christ Who Is Not Preparing for the End Times?
In the Word of God, a believer’s salvation is secured by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, not by how prepared they are for the end times. A person who is truly born again is sealed by the Spirit, and Jesus Himself promised that His sheep will never perish (John 10:27–28). Yet the Bible also gives very real warnings about what happens to believers who choose to live carelessly, lukewarm, or indifferent as the final days approach. These warnings do not threaten their salvation, but they do reveal the consequences of spiritual neglect.
A believer who ignores the times, who does not watch or pray, will not lose eternity with Christ — but they will lose eternal rewards. Paul makes this clear when he says that a believer’s works will be tried by fire, and if a life has been lived in spiritual carelessness, that believer “shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved” (1 Corinthians 3:15). The loss is not heaven itself, but the rewards, crowns, and honors that Christ desires to give. It is a permanent loss that will be felt when the believer stands before their Savior.
The Bible also says that unprepared believers will feel a deep shame at Christ’s appearing. John warns, “And now, little children, abide in him; that… we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming” (1 John 2:28). Those who walk closely with Christ will meet Him with joy and confidence; those who slept spiritually will be overwhelmed with regret, knowing they wasted precious time.
For Christians who refuse to watch the signs of the times, the coming of the Lord will bring fear instead of rejoicing. Paul says that the Day of the Lord should not overtake believers as a thief (1 Thessalonians 5:4). This means that believers who are awake and watchful will recognize the season and rejoice, but unprepared believers will be caught off guard, confused, and shaken. They will still be saved, but their hearts will not be ready, and fear will overtake the joy that should have been theirs.
Believers who ignore prophetic warnings also miss out on their God-given assignments. Jesus spoke of the servant whom the Master finds faithfully working when He returns, and said, “Blessed is that servant” (Matthew 24:46). Those who are distracted, worldly, or spiritually asleep will miss the blessing of being found faithfully serving Christ in the final moments of history. They will look back and realize that they allowed the cares of life to rob them of their calling.
A lack of preparation also leaves the believer spiritually weak and vulnerable. Jesus warned His disciples to watch and pray so they would not enter into temptation (Matthew 26:41). The end times are marked by unprecedented deception and spiritual pressure. Believers who refuse to stay watchful will find themselves easily shaken, easily confused, and easily discouraged.
In the end, a believer who is not preparing for the end times will still be taken in the rapture, because the rapture is for those who are in Christ. But their entrance into the presence of the Lord will be marked by loss, shame, and a sorrow that could have been avoided. They will realize they wasted opportunities to honor Christ, to warn others, to grow spiritually, and to shine as lights in a darkening world. Though they will forever be with the Lord, their eternal rewards will not match what could have been.
